Last year I left France – my country of origin – and moved to California. This was a bold move of mine as people don’t usually leave a job at a big company to start their own business in a different country.
What makes it even bolder is that my son was just four-months old back when I made that decision. Both my wife and I would leave our jobs, sell our house, our cars, and fly to California to start a new life there, in a place where we didn’t know anybody. Crazy, right?
These days more and more people tell me that they have this dream of doing the same thing: To leave their home country and start a new life in the United States. This usually sets me off and I can’t help but tell them that I never dreamed of moving to California. I just did it.
Morpheus: The Matrix is a computer-generated dream world built to keep us under control in order to change a human being into this. [holds up a Duracell battery]
Neo: No, I don’t believe it. It’s not possible.
Morpheus: I didn’t say it would be easy, Neo. I just said it would be the truth.
Dreaming is good in many ways. It helps people go through their lifes, it brings them joy and hope. But dreaming, as good as it may feel, is not enough to get you where you want to be. That’s the reason why I stopped dreaming and started acting instead.
No matter what your goal is, only action will bring you one step closer to it
In my case, I had to find a way to move to California. Since I’m not a US citizen, the first step was to get an immigration visa. I looked online for US immigration attorneys, started interviewing them to gather as much information as possible.
Fast forward a couple weeks later, and I knew I could do it. It was just a matter of planning and acting accordingly to make it happen. There was no dream, just a path to take and follow.
I’m not saying it is an easy thing to do. Dreams should be used to inspire our actions. Think about it for a second. Is there anything you’ve been dreaming of doing? What have you done to make it happen? What about thinking of that very first step… now?
Don’t hesitate to let me know what you’re up to in the comments section. I’d love to help you leave the Matrix!
